MANNY TRUJILLO JR
Plastic, Reconstructive, & Maxillofacial Surgeon
A native of Georgia, Manny Trujillo Jr, MD attended Gardner-Webb from 2000-2004 and was a member of the men’s soccer team. As a freshman, he was named captain and led the team in its inaugural first 4 years of Division 1 competition. Academically, Dr. Trujillo double-majored in Chemistry and Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree, Dr. Trujillo obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He then completed a rigorous 6 year training program in General Surgery. During his residency, he discovered his passion for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His passion for reconstruction grew, and he then made the decision to perform another 3 years of specialized training in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. There, he focused intensely on the fields of reconstructive microsurgery and supermicrosurgery, which involve transplanting tissue from one area of the body to another, and using a microscope to suture blood vessels together less than 1mm in diameter.
After completing his Plastic Surgery training, Dr. Trujillo began his career by performing a wide array of reconstructive procedures. Today, Dr. Trujillo routinely performs complex microsurgical transplant procedures to restore the form and function of patients who have suffered deformities caused by trauma and cancer. For example, Dr. Trujillo has performed a successful arm replantation after it was amputated in an industrial machine accident. He also performed a toe-to-thumb transplant on a patient that lost his thumb in a wood-splitter accident.
An Assistant Professor, Dr. Trujillo is committed to the education of the next generation of surgeons. He is heavily involved in the teaching of surgery residents. Dr. Trujillo is also in the process of founding a microsurgical training program offered to plastic surgeons seeking to learn this skill. The program aims to see its first trainee in the fall of 2020.
Dr. Trujillo is extremely passionate about the advancement of healthcare. He has been involved in many projects that have resulted in improvements to the care of patients. His involvement in the Medcraze platform represents the culmination of his passion in healthcare innovation. Through this exciting platform, patients can become more educated about medical technologies and innovations.
Outside the hospital, Dr. Trujillo enjoys spending time with his wife, and four children. He has recently developed a passion for tailgating and on Saturdays can be found at football games with friends and family.
