Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a technique to open the artery and use a stent to keep it open. The earlier generations used bare metal stents. Although these are the “old” type of stents, these are still good options in certain clinical scenarios. The newer generation of this technology involves coating the metal in medications to help keep artery open. These medications are constantly evolving and the newest generation has even better outcomes than the earlier medications. There are also bioabsorbable stents that dissolve over time. Unfortunately, these have had issues and are not yet ready for routine clinical use.
