A hernia occurs when there is a hole in the muscles of the abdominal wall, allowing a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to push through the muscle layer. A ventral hernia is a hernia that occurs at any location along the midline (vertical center) of the abdomen wall. There are three types of ventral hernia: Epigastric (stomach area) hernia, Umbilical (belly button) hernia, Incisional hernia.
Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair is a technique to fix tears or openings in the abdominal wall using small incisions, laparoscopes (small telescopes inserted into the abdomen) and a patch (screen or mesh) to reinforce the abdominal wall. It may offer a quicker return to work and normal activities with decreased pain for some patients.
Gentrix surgical mesh is a product produced by Acell and is used to repair hernia defects. The mesh falls into the category of surgical meshes called “biologics,” which describe mesh material whose purpose is to be incorporated and become part of the body over time. This is in contrast to “prosthetic” mesh, which is much more permanent.
