Injectable for Fat Reduction
Submental Fat Reduction
Until recently, the only treatment options available for submental fat reduction involved chin exercise, eating a healthy balanced diet, liposuction accompanied by a neck lift or chin augmentation, and laser-assisted liposuction. The downside to surgical options is they are risky, invasive, often times expensive, and there is a sometimes-prolonged recovery period. Due to the risk associated with surgery and invasive procedures, there has been a significant growth in nonsurgical aesthetic procedures for submental fat reduction.
Submental Fat
Submental fat, commonly known as double chin, is a common condition that occurs when a layer of fat forms over time below your chin. Multiple factors can contribute to the development of a double chin such as aging, weight gain, and genetics. No matter how much you exercise and monitor your weight submental fat may not go away without surgical interventions.
Kybella
Kybella is the first and only FDA approved injectable drug to treat moderate to severe fat in the upper neck, otherwise known as a double chin.2 Kybella is a non-human/non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in our body that assists in breaking down and absorbing dietary fat. When Kybella is injected into a double chin, is causes destruction of fat cells. The fat cells, once destroyed, can no longer store or accumulate fat, resulting in the improvement of submental fat and submental skin tightening.3 Therefore, results from Kybella are long-lasting and potentially permanent.
Some people notice results from Kybella after one treatment, but most people notice results after 2-4 treatments. Some of the adverse reactions from Kybella include, but are not limited to swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and hardening of the skin in the treatment area.
In clinical trials, Kybella was compared to a placebo and 80% of participants showed improvement in their submental fat after 12 weeks of treatment and at the end of the trial, 82.4% of participants reported a significant improvement in their appearance. Kybella is a safe and effective alternative to invasive surgery to reduce double chin
